Another Chance For Newspapers To Carry Photographs Where She Looks Intense And Creative, Yet Attractive

The Orange Prize goes to Zadie Smith for On Beauty.

  • What do guys have against goodlooking young women authors?? Do you see us carping about similarly blessed male writers? It's like if you are attractive and female, you can only write like Jackie Collins! Pshaw!

  • Oh dear. The reference was to the fact that the media are more likely to carry a photograph of an author -- male or female -- if he or she is attractive. No sexist intentions whatsoever!

  • Well, no, they would carry even Naipaul's photographs if he won an award or even just let rip at random authors. Probably with his cat.

  • Yes, they admit it grudgingly, but more attractive people's books are more likely to be published too!

As to the book itself, "On Beauty" is actually my favorite out of all of the ones written by her.

Did anyone else read it and like it?

  • Hmm... The same paper, speaking of the same story, but this link shows a totally unglamorous shot of Zadie:
